Shot from just outside the back door. The clouds made it look like the entire horizon's on fire.

Yup I had similar near me, amazing sight apprently the moon is causing the fire effect, not sure of the specifics. I wasnt in the open like that with a full horizon coming at me! I had awful houses in front of me so could only see the top. Yours its like the aftermath of a nuke! The 1st picture just looks gigantic scale wise and the colours pop out perfectly.

Thanks for all the feedback folks! Just for reference, the shot was taken at sunrise of the peninsula across the bay from here. There are actually quite a few houses there, but the use of a GND filter to keep the foreground from being washed out by the intense light has darkened the land mass sufficiently that you can't see most of them except for a few light patches on the right of the first photo (that filter is also why the horizon's at exactly the halfway mark in the shot :-). It was a mad rush to get the filter and exposure just right before the sun rose over the distant mountain range.
For NZ'ers, the foreground is the Whangaparoa peninsula, and the higher range in the background is the Coromandel. |
