I have often wondered why there are no, at least none that I have seen, non SLR cameras that allow you to manually zoom (instead of pressing a button). Is there something phyiscally impossible (or hard) about creating a lens like this? Because otherwise it would be awesome to be able to control the zoom manually on my FZ10 (it takes too long to go from tele to wide). Or is the only reason they have it controled electronically because they think it is more user friendly. If anyone more techinically knowledgable can tell me if there is some design problem about that, I would appreciate it.

Because if the FZ30 (if that is what they will call it) has a real manual zoom then I would certiannly upgrade.

Sony 828, KM D7H/A1/A2, Panasonic LC1 etc all have mechanical zoom. I think the mechanical zoom needs more time (= $$$) and more parts to assemble, and probably will cost more.
