Took this around sunset one evening last fall. The Washington Monument is about two miles away; the Capitol is about three miles away.

Really nice pic. Good story behind this as well. Came across a war history book. Egad, lets just pray this planet will one day have no more war.

Hauntingphoto, Evelyn.

If you ever want to read asobering book about Iwo Jima, read:

Flags of our Fathers by James Bradley, son of one of the six men who raised the flag.

Mr. Bradley was a corpsman and he returned to his beloved small town in Illiniois to continue his work as a mortician. He never, not once, took advantage of his notiriety. He just said the real heroes are buried on Iwo Jima.

I often wondered why he would return to a profession where hedealt with death after surviving Iwo Jima. After some reflection, I came to believe that Mr. Bradley returned to his profession to provide a death with dignity for his friends and to counsel their loved ones left behind, the neighbors, the friends in his small town...after seeing so much death with indignity on Iwo Jima.

Thank you for looking and commenting.

Ken, as the mother of two boys, I fervently hope we will find a way to eradicate war and the need for memorials such as this.

Digcamfan, your thoughts are insightful. Thanks for sharing.
