I did this last year, and am doing this again now. In south India, particularly in Tamilnadu, the period between mid-Dec to mid-Jan, corresponding to the Tamil month of "Margazhi", is a special period of devotion. People get up very early in the morning and go to the nearby temple for worship. Girls and women decorate the entrance with beautiful 'kolams' on the road, drawn with the help of a set of dots to guide the design or pattern they gradually expand later. There is no limit to the size - it is left toone's imagination and ability. Given below is a set of simple kolams I could photograph on a quick walk around my neighbourhood early morning today. Though shot at around 6.30am, you can already see the kolams slowly getting wiped off by the tyre marks of bicycles and two-wheelers. On the last day of "Margazhi" month and the first day of "Thai" month which is celebrated as the famous "Pongal" festival, the streets are painted with kolams of all sizes and patterns lavishly filled with color powder. If possible, I will try another shoot that day and post it here. The soil is red earth and gravel here, so you will only see brown/red roads in my town.
