As I said the Butterfly pic background was blurred in photoshop.
Neither a very wide aperture on a dSLR could blur that way, for the ground is too close to the wings. Because of optical laws, dSLR are more effective in isolating the main subject from backgrounds, owing to the larger size of the CCD which gives shallower Depth of Field (DOF). On the other hand compact cams are more effective If you want to keep nearly everything in focus. In general, even on compact cams, to achieve blurry Backgrounds three are the main factors: 1) Distance of main subject from its background. The more this distance the easier to achieve a blurred/bokeh BKGR 2) Aperture: the more the aperture (i.e. f/2, f/2,8, f/4) the shallower the DOF, whereas f/8 (and bigger numbers where available) provide more DOF. 3) Zoom: If you zoom in (example from mid to tele on FZs) this will provide more blurred backgrounds, espec. if they are distant from the main subject.
