I do like reading about that FZ28 and it sounds like some nice changes were made.

My question for those who can understand the wierdness os sensor size numbers:
FZ-18 has a 1/2.5" Type CCD.

FZ-28 has a 1/2.33" sensor.

Both above copied from DPR pages. I assume sensor and CCD are the same. How do they compare size-wise?

Wow! That does look intriguing! It does look really good.

The 27mm wide equivalent is nice, of course giving up a little on the tele end, but why did the tele aperture decrease to 4.4?

Zoom in movie mode is an improvement!

The 32.1x Extra Optical Zoom is a really nice feature to have, even at reduced megapixels.

The AF tracking also sounds like a good feature.

2.3 is larger, but I read in one of the previews the sensor is slightly denser with pixels but very similar to the FZ18.

I think these mfgs are starting to shovel poop against the tide.

Thanks Gene. I can just never figure out that sensor stuff.

So perhaps the slight decrease in zoom is the same size lens and a larger sensor.

Be interesting to see shots. I am sure my FZ18 will die around warranty expiration time as I beat the heck out of it.

I might be misunderstanding what you meant, but I believe the decrease in maximum zoom is because the lens slightly wider at 27mm equivalent. But because of the increase in megapixels, the Extra Optical Zoom increased.

That could be, but the lens did not gain near as much wider as it lost at the other end.

But as to what I meant, take an FZ8 and an FZ50. Both are the same 12x zoom, but the FZ8 has a smaller lens because the sensor is smaller. So, if the lens on the FZ28 is the same size as the one on the FZ18, but the sensor is slightly larger, the zoom would go down for that reason regardless of any changes at the other end. For more on this do a search on DSLR multiplier factors. Steve's site has a chart for that but I can't for the life of me find it when I want it.

chip 1/2.5" diagonal = 0.40" = 10.16mm

10.16 : 5 = 2.032 chips size = 2.032*4 x 2.032*3 = 8.128 x 6.096 (mm) --> size = 49.548 mm²

chip 1/2.33" diagonal = 0.43" = 10.90mm

10.90 : 5 = 2.180 chip size = 2.180*4 x 2.180*3 = 8.721 x 6.541 (mm) --> size = 57.042 mm²

49.548 mm² : 8100000 = 0.000006117 mm² / pixel

57.042 mm² : 10100000 = 0.000005647 mm² / pixel

FZ28-pixels are ~ 8% smaller then FZ18-pixels



Same calculation gives for NV24 / NV100

NV24 chip size = 58.5mm² ... 10.1 Mpixel ... 0.00000579 mm² / pixel

NV100 chip size = 104.6mm² ... 14.7 Mpixel ... 0.00000712 mm² / pixel

NV100's pixel are ~ 23% BIGGER then NV24's

Here is another question. Regarding noise and pixels. If you set a9.1 MP camera such as a TZ5, to 4 MP, will that allow higher ISO photos with lower noise?

It shouldn't. The decrease in MP is due to using less of the sensor and the pixels are at the same density.
