Hello Everyone,

I am thorughly confused whether I should buy Canon S1 IS ($ 212) or Panasonic FZ5 ($324). I am not sure which of the digicam is a worthy buy. I am student so I don't want to be extravagant but at the same time I wanted a camera that has an excellent image quality. Especially since I am going down to the Flushing Meadows for the US open. I am an amateur photographer and know quite little about cameras. I have read the reviews for both and the more I read the more confused I am. I have read good reviews about FZ20 but only average about FZ5 and was wondering if it was worth spending $100 extra on the panny though I dont mind if it is an excellent camera. The image quality is prime importance to me along with the Zoom. Given canon's years and years of experience compared to panasonic in making camerasmakes me sceptical about the panny. Also, the PCMag did not give it a good review. Any kind of help or advise is appreciated. Please do send me some pointers I posted this onmany other forums but have gotten no replies. I would request the Panasonic FZ5 or S1 IS owners to give me some advice.

Thank you

The more apt comparison is the canon S2 IS and the FZ5; both 5mp. The S1 really isn't in the same league although I suppose $212 is a pretty good price. The $324 for the fz5 is also excellent - where is that? The FZ5 is a great camera - dpreview gives it a Highly Recommended rating. See http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz5/ The S2 is quite comparable to the FZ5 with a few more features such as flip LCD and a superior video mode. It's current price is about $100 more than the FZ5. For $324 I would jump on the FZ5!
