#3 I've not seen the expensive monopods latch system but this works great.

What ISO speed was used for the D50?
I see that the FZ was set to ISO 80 but I couldn't see the setting for the D50. I also noticed that the D50 was shooting at a smaller aperture and faster shutter speed than the FZ which can be an advantage in situations like this. The first set for example the FZ was at 1/80 f4 while the D50 was at 1/200 f5.6. The FZ was one stop away from not having enough light to get that shot while the D50 may have been 1-3 stops from not having enuogh light. |

The lowest ISO on the D50 is 200 and thats what they were shot at.
Iso 800 on the D50 is similar to ISO 100 on the FZ30 as far as noise goes. And F5.6 is the largest aperture that lens has at 400mm. To be sharpest it should be stopped down a bit more but I am pretty much a point and shooter also. |

@ d-sr,
Hello Don,you can extremely improve the handling of your monopod with a small Ball-Head. Look at my Manfrotto with Hama Ball Head: It is very comfortable. You are able toshoot your feet with camera mounted on a Monopod. Greetings Klaus |

OK, so the D50 has the ability to shoot in light roughly 2 stops darker than the FZ at that focal range with the lens you have if shot with ISO 800. That is a HUGE advantage IMO. Not only could you have shot in darker conditions, but you could have stopped down your lens to f8 and shot with ISO 400 to get a better picture from the Nikon than you already have.
So, here's my point if it's at all visible…comparing the FZ to a dSLR isn't fair since it's an apples to oranges comparison. I tried to compare my FZ's (fz1 and fz3 at the time) to my KM dSLR when I acquired the KM and did so in about the same fashion that you have here with decent light and long zooms to play into the hands of the FZ. The bottom line turned out to be that the FZ's are great cameras but that dSLR's are better and you pay for it. |

You are exactly correct.....I am not trying to compare ...just point out that for 1/4 what I haveinvested in a DSLR the FZ30 takes great photos.
Here is a photo my wife could not get with the FZ30 but if she practiced she would get some of them. But its much easier with the D50 |
