The full range of the optical zoom uses the full sensor. That is full wide through 12X. Anything beyond 12X or 420mm equivalent uses a smaller part of the sensor.

That is true of any Mp you have set in the resolution. To get less than 8Mp it downsamples the image from the full CCD within the full optical zoom range.
