found this lone guy hanging on for dear life to the milkweed in the backyard this evening during a chilly and windy twilight.

Poor little Flutter-by... :(

Hope it warmed up enough the next morning for it to fly south to warmer climate...

Amazing butterfly. They do not live long enough to make the entire round trip journey, but it takes several generations. They keep laying eggs along the way and the new generation continues on the migration. By the way, they only lay eggs on milkweed, which gives the caterpillars toxins which keeps birds from eating them when they grow up to be butterflies.

as much as butterflies do look beautiful, those caterpillar things always give me shivers. :O

The law of nature. His babies will continue his journey. Keep an eye on this plant - you may find eggs and caterpillars in the days to come.
