Very nice picture. Whale shots can be iffy, especially when bouncing around on a boat.

You are so right about bouncing around the boat. I had to hang on with one hand and shoot the picture with the other. It was really bouncy! I wasn't sure any of the pictures would turn out. Funny thing though, the gentleman i sat next to had the exact same camera as i did. Who would have thought??

Nice shot. Photographing whales aint easy!
If you ever get to Australia around August to November and you want whales, head for Hervey Bay in Queenland. The place is justifyably famous for humpback whale watching. Last time out I had a small Kodak. Cant wait to get back with the FZ30. One thing I learned was to avoid going on the the bigger boats and get on something you can easily move around on both side to side and back to front. |

Any tips on settings or filters ...I believe I will have an opportunity to try photoing whales in Alaska this spring and I would appreciate any tips.

I imagine a polarising filter would be the go, especially when the whale swims around andunder the boat.
Best tip though is dont fall in the water! :-) |

The polarizer is a good idea if you have any sun at all on the water. Last time I tried to take whale shots, it was raining, 8-foot seas, and strong winds. I took about 40 shots and the best I got was this. Needless to say, no polarizer needed...

good picture. Hope you didn't get sea sick with the high sea's. I had a polorizar filter on my camera when I went whale watching. I also set the camera to sport setting and 1/500. I was surprised that so many of my pictures came out. It was so bouncy on the boat I thought I was going to fly over the side a couple of time. Here is a shot of the whale swimming under the boat
