Flickr or Photobucket at Photobucket resize the photo to 800 X 600 before uploading.

free....

There is a problem, you never know how long this feature is free on some hosts.

Some of us are using http://www.zoto.com 2GB free, direct linking, no bandwidth limits. A reliable host for some time now.

Store your pictures in the desired size (eg.800*600) and link to the original size here. You should use resizing by the host only for thumbs. Resized pictures have a reduced quality level.

I don't like the galleries on the host, but the service of direct linking to threads and blogs is ok.

Sorry; I was not uptodate (as gene always is...)

photobucket has expanded its free space form 50Mb (next to nothing) to:

Free accounts get 1 GB of space and 10 GB of bandwidth per month.

flickr:
  • 20 MB monthly upload limit [/*]
  • 3 photosets [/*]
  • Photostream views limited to the 200 most recent images [/*]
  • Storage of smaller (resized) images
[/*]
