Why is the lens shade tulip shaped instead of just round?

Are the cutouts useful? Is it supposed to be mounted a certain way?

the cutouts are intended to reduce vignetting at lower zoom settings. the theory is that it reduces light from the top, bottom and sides but doesn't block the corners of the image as much. usually mounted so the top and bottom "petals" are longer than the oneson the sides.
