I'd also been waiting to see the FZ40 or as it is now 50. I think Panasonic have got this one totaly wrong, 6 to 8Mp with a larger less noisy sensor would have been ideal, a faster lens and better EVF/LCD wouldn't have hurt either but maybe that just wasn't enough to make it "different" to the FZ30 in their minds, they have gone for the larger "more pixels must be better" consumer market instead of the smaller "image quality" market.
I will be sticking with my FZ1 and FZ30 butif I did upgrade toa DSLRin the next 6 months it would be to either a Pentax isT or a Canon 350, I have handled the L1 and my initial opinion is that I just don't like it, it's an ugly looking thing!, a very "old" body design that went out years ago, the Canon/Nikon/Pentax cameras are more like a traditional SLR and handle accordingly. |

As I understand it, it IS a different sensor (and has the Viera III engine). From the demo shots I've seen noise is markedly reduced. And it takes the SDHC card - not many do, and a 2Gblimit is ridiculous if you're shooting RAW.
