Since you said you have PS and elements I thought I would try and explain if you were to use them....

Very honestly auto levels worked pretty good on the woodpecker ...thats the only one I downloaded.

But in case it would not you can use this on most photos

I opened the photo and a new levels layer selected luminoscity mode as that does not effect colors.

and play with the sliders until you improve the contrast like #1 and then I opened a new layer and ran unsharp mask at an amount of 200 and a radius of 1.1 and got #2

The whole thing only takes a minute.
