I have the L1 with the Leica kit lens. My wife swears that the lens in Auto focus does not focus as sharp as my old Nikon F3 with manual focus lens and a split screen viewfinder. I think she is right. What to do? I tried the Leica in manual focus. same problem.

I see many have read the thread and no one seems to have an opinion. Let me make one. Take it back to the shop or any camera shop for another live opinion. You may just have a smudge or bad lens. Some Leica lens were recalled. Did you upgrade to Ver. 2

its hard to see in dim poro mirror setups, that contributes
if you have 3 point AF selected, try just the centre one
its common that people find it improves a lot after that

Old post.. but I found the focus is much better when my finger is not blocking the AF light
And I also see better results when I use a mid-range A setting, stay away from F2.8 and go to the middle or shoot in P mode. Make sure the lens is clean and light for AF is not smudged and turned on... I have seen this get better for me
