DD, so the "new" firmware, are they "hacked" to remove the dependency on Panasonic batteries? Or?

No, all are "original Pana"
The old versions let you use 3rd party batteries (tested by forum people), the "new" version ... who knows ?
Perhaaaaps Pana forgot 3rdp batteries in "old" versions ... who knows?

There are many differences between "old" and "new" if you compare with good, old DOS FC (FileCompare)

Hello DonaldDuc!

I have been looking at your photos for the last 4 days and I am amazed what image quality you have posted here persistently. I am not surprised of the quality, because I have the FZ-28 myself and know about Panasonic / Leica quality, but still I am amazed by the very good (technical) shots you have published her and your enthusiasm - this GH1 must be a very nice camera.

Some of your work here is phenomenal and outstanding IMO.

I am myself looking for a replacement for my FZ-28 - or maybe I should say: An addition to my FZ-28 (because I will never sell it!!) and threads like this (even if some members write som critizisme here...) are unquestionable a very good source for fiewing quality photos, technical information, as well as getting topped up with refreshing enthusiasm for a camera (I know exactly how you feel about your GH1 as I had the same about my FZ-28) - and the Panasonic Lumix DMC G1 is nr.: 1 on my priority-list right now! See: http://forums.steves-digicams.com/pa...g1-vs-gh1.html

I want to thank you for posting and posting and posting! Do not stop, please!

Best regards from Norway

Thanx !

I'm using my G1 & GH1 DAILY - best cameras I ever had.
If you don't need video, G1 is enough - same quality like GH1.
For movies GH1 is excellent, lens 14-140 is worth each cent!

Donald: can you give us some GH1 landscape picks? And a 140 zoom pick?
I would really like to see the GH1 big picture and zooming resolution.

Ordo, I still haven't had a chance to take any landscape photos but I did take quite a few telephotos with the G1 and Lumix 45-200mm. Here are a couple of images at 200mm with ISO 400. The first is right out of the camera. Absolutely nothing was done to it in terms of PP (not even cropping). The spider I changed it to B&K and cropped a bit. If you download them, you'll see that the resolution is just amazing.
