Kowhai is Maori for "yellow", the trees bloom in early spring and are pollinated by tui, a native bird with a brush-like tongue specially adapted for drinking kowhai nectar. Because of the mass of flowers and relatively short flowering period, the birds overindulge and get rather drunk on the nectar. I don't know whether this contributes to their amazing singing, but something's making them very vocal.
