Hi all,

Not much at the refuge the other day, but I managed to sit still long enough for this guy. It was hunting on the land instead of for fish. Weird! It got so close I had to back off on the zoom a little bit.

I wonder what was in the bushes?

Nice capture Mark. I saw a Heron hunting on land like that and it turned out to be a snake in the frass.

Thanks everyone. I find it tough to get well lit shots with this camera. It seems to blow highlights out fairly easily.

Donna -- I bet you see these all the time! Do you have any heron shots?

Don -- A snake! Wow, if one of those were around, I wish I could have seen that too!

These herons might be the only things left around here in a couple of months.
I'll have to get some creative shots going.

Super mug shot. I have never been that close to one.

nice work! i've had opportunities to get within 15 feet of hunting herons, and they make for some wonderful photos. herons will eat almost anything they can catch, from large fish to minnows, frogs, lizards, snakes, even small rodents and large insects (i've got photos of a green heron snatching a dragonfly out of the air...). when they're hunting, especially if they've sighted prey, they are extremely focused, and their concentration is such that they will sometimes ignore humans, even in relatively close proximity...

again, nice work!
