muskrats are also about 1/4 to 1/3 the size of a beaver, much smaller. they generally nest in burrows ina riverbank or along a lake shore, usually only accessible through an underwater entrance... i've seen them swimming with reeds or grass in their mouths, then disappear near shore... the trail of bubbles and disturbed water leads up to the shore then simply stops, so i know they've gone into their underwater doorways...
