to be honest i think there may be something wrong with this old guy. I have never seen one with feathers that look quite like this one and it was only on the opposite side of a small canal from me and never got spooked.

It doesn't look like he feels to good. Excellent photo, though. I envy you, having that reserve so close. If you will resize your picture to 800x600 it will make for better viewing on the forum.

GBH's all have those wispy feathers, those do not mean there's anything wrong with them. this one could be an older bird - his bill looks a bit weatherworn - but it's really impossible to tell. they also often stand without moving for hours at a time, and seem to know when they're in danger. in a reserve, and across thecanal from you, this one may have stayed put because it never felt you were a threat. i've been within 15-20 feet of GBH's at a local park, simply because they seem to know there's no danger there. even large cameras with long lenses don't seem to spook them.

i agree... resizing this shot would be a plus. it's large enough that there are some jaggies visible in spots... did you cro the original a lot?

It is certainly an older Heron and was most likely just not to concerned about your presence.I shoot them all the time at the end of my street and they react to the surroundings and do seem to know as was mentioned when in danger.
Nice shot but needs to be resized as was suggested for the best effect.
