I'm about to order an FL36 flash for my FZ50. Can you give me the benefit of your experience with this combination plus any tips, tricks & caveats you may have for me? What, if any, would be the benefits of a Sto Fen diffuser - particularly with respect to flash shadows? Many thanks from a newbie. Cheers and all the best for the holiday season.

hi windrowe
i have a FL36 for my Oly, and in some ways you may get more inf over at the OlympusSLR forum. TTL mode is really worth it, but the FL36 can be a tad underpowered in larger rooms above say 20ft or 6 metres. The stofen will only add to that position, by taking out 1 or 2 more stops.

I have an LC1, which has noise issues just like your FZ50, and it was my decision when flash shopping for it (they have a Leica flash hotshoe), to get some more power, for light = less noise. On that basis I would urge you to go for a FL50 if you can afford it, it has much more power, additional battery capacity, and can be worked with a sync cord, the FL36 is just 2 x AA's and no sync chord.

On the other hand, the 36 did much for my Oly, as the freedom of TTL flash is pretty much set and forget photography. And the oly had menu items to increase or decrease flash power from the camera, or use slow sync. Even in manual mode, its easy to work with in situations like below, when balancing indoor and exterior lighting.

Thanks Riley for the response and advice. Your sample shot is great, informative .... and encouraging. Also was able to dig up more information on the internet. Based on what you tell me, I may be wise to go the distance for the FL50. Have a great holiday!

Post some feedback and sample shots with your FL50 / FZ50 comboonce you have a chance. I'm also interested in this flash.
