Armed with tips gleaned from this forum, decided to try my hand at freezing motion with the flash. Used the pop-up on the FZ50 (my FL50 has not arrived yet). Had to make quite a few tries (and errors) before I got it more-or-less right. While I realize I have a lot more to learn from the experts out there, I still wanted to post (rather diffidently) one of the results of my first attempt. Camera settings were ISO 100; manual mode f2.8 at 1/250; 35mm eqiv focal length; flash comp +3.0 EV (to get it to reach far enough):

Get extra flash reach with a homemade attachment, it works on the fz30 so it should be the same on the fz50. Here's my link.

I have not tried action shots using a flash so I can't give any advice but it looks like you stopped the action just fine. You caught the little girl in a cute pose.
