Stalking Wildlife - Mule Deer - Sun & Shadows

2nd test for my new Pentax K10D W/Tamron 24 - 135 Lens.

Equipment: Scent blocker Cameo, Doe in season spray, Deer grunt call.

I had found where deer were going thru the woods to get to a farmers field to eat. I guess this would be called stalking backwards because I hid in a bush and waited for them rather than finding them and then stalking in closer. I figured this would be a good test because the sun was going down so I would have some sunlight and also shadows.

The Deer trail with a deer going towards the field and a close up of one of the bucks that came by the bush I had crawled into.

A pretty nice buck

A pretty lady

A very curious young buck

Another pretty nice buck

I am thinking this afternoon I will un-pack the Sigma 50 - 500 and start reading about it. It is next for testing.

More nice shots Roger! Now, you are getting smart. Let them come to you instead of having to sneek all over the mountain. Would it be legal or exceptable to find a beautiful background and feed the deer to bring them in?

That Doe looks pregnant, are is she just well fed?

BTW: That Sigma 50-500 shounds like quite the lens. Hope you like it as much as I think you will. You won't be missing the 12X zoom with that.

Hi Don,

The fact is I have a 50 pound bag of alfalfa pellets on order. The plan is to pick a spot on some of the trails and scatter a few out where I want them to be for a photo. The doe scent works pretty good but I think the alfalfa might work better.

I have no idea if she is pregnant or not the rut just finished in December. The deer that are going to the ranch fields are doing pretty good as far as food is concerned.

I am planning on taking the BIGMA out of the box today and starting to read how to use it.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

My favourite is "pretty Lady" but they are all up to your normal standard Roger.

Question. Do you put the doe in season spray on yourself?...WOW

Hi annie57, thanks for the nice comment about my photos.

No I spray It around the area I want the bucks to go to. On the snow and on some weeds in this case.

Durring the heavy rut I have sprayed it on a rag and then tied the rag to a limb and when I came back the next day it was all torn up with lots of rubs on the limb.

Roger, I am speechless. There is nothing I can add to what has already been said. I have my 5 year old granddaughte with me right now and she really enjoyed looking at your photos. She told me that she had just learned that only boy deer had antlers, so she knew which one was the girl. Then she gave me a lesson in God and nature. So thank you, ( and I mean that) I learned a lot,:G( I told her) real quick, but it was very rewarding. I did get my Sunday school lesson, and it was a real joy.

P. S. she loves animals, and has to be with me all the time I am working with the horses.

Tcook, thanks for the nice words about my photos.

My friends here get the 1st look at the k10 with the BIGMA lens. The other boards can wait until tomorrow.
