Today is Pongal, an important Tamil festival. It marks the end of winteras the sun stops its journey south and starts moving towards north. There is grand and colorful celebration in rural and village areas over the next few days, donning new clothes, painting/white-washing homes andeven paintingthe horns of cows and oxen. In urban areas, the celebration is limited to rangoli (called Kolam in Tamil) outside homes and a good feast. A few of the Kolams that I saw during today's morning walk..

They are done with chalk powder, mixed with colors. Today was the culmination of a month-longpractice as far as Kolam is concerned-meaning they did this everyday for a month, drawing a new design every time. Some add their imagination - as you can see in pic 3 (bottom left) - by using flowers in place of color powder. It is such a joy to watch early in the morning, it is also a pity that these designs get gradually smudged and erased by traffic as the day dawns.
