Donna, great image. Is the background darkness a PP or a specific local situation or a shooting technique thing? It really works.

Thanks all, I spot metered it and the background can out dark. And I darkened it more in Photoshop. Donna

Looks like you took your pelican and tree stump and brought them into your studio and set up a black background!

A flash with a fast synch speed plus good distance between subject and background and a smallish aperture will give that darkened background too.
