does anybody know if there are any good noise reduction programs out there ?

preferably free downloads (if possible). The only softwear pp I use is Picasa 2 .

to my knowledge it does not have any "noise reduction"

Neat Image is a popular one and works quite well.
You can get a FREE fully funcional demo version at

http://www.neatimage.com/download.html

The one drawback to the demo version I had was you can only save to jpeg format with more then minimun compression .

I`d recommend Neat Image too, easy to use and does a good job of tidying up noisy pics, it can also be used as a Photoshop plugin apparently if you buy the pro version. You can also download profiles for Panasonic cameras off the net to get optimum performance from the program.

I have Neat Image also. I looked at user interfaces of Noise Ninja and Neat Image and thought Neat Image was more user friendly. (meaning simple, although you can make it complex if you wish. The free version does save as JPEGs at 92% quality but it did not make a difference that I could see. Free version does strip EXIF data though. I think I have home version, the 50 dollar one, and it has a PhotoShop plug in, but it will not work with Photoshop batch processing. You can download profiles, or you can make your own very easily with a calibration target that comes with it.

I came across a pic which I thought would give a good idea of how well Neat Image cleans up noise......this is the original shot......loads of noise and a pretty awful pic overall..........

This is the result of a couple of minutes tidying the pic up with Neat Image, no doubt with a bit more time I could have improved it a bit more......still not a great pic but a lot better than the original......
