While down on the waterfront watching swans last Friday, I was reminded of some lines of W.H.Auden which seemed to fit. Thought I might share them with you:

"Fish in the unruffled lakes
Their swarming colours wear,
Swans in the winter air
A white perfection have ...... "

All gifts that , to the swan
Impulsive Nature gave,
The majesty and pride ..... "

This one interested me. He opened up his wing and tail feathers like this, turned stern-to the wind and went sailing past. Surprising speed. Then he turned, swam back upwind of me and did it all over again - two or three more times. Was he:
- playing in the wind ?
- flirting with another swan ?
- hoping for food ?
- hamming it up for the camera ?!

Never seen that behaviour before. It was so cute ! Anyone who knows a lot more about swans than I got any comments ?
