Photos are probably wonderful but posted so large I cannot see them properly on my monitor.

LoveLife Mar 15, 2007 4:38 PM

Every other photo 1,3 and 5should fit. I put the 2,4 and 6 on to demonstrate what 4MP can do when you do not screw around with NR in the camera.

RedStickMan Mar 15, 2007 5:50 PM

Only 4 MP, but you can still clearly make out that dude's individual nose hairs.

:O

Seriously though, it is clear that these photos don't suffer with noise nearly as much they would from the later, higher megapizel FZ's.

Ok Lovelife, I think you already have made the point. But from the c/c point of view, your 1st image is much better then the 2nd(i.e.4MP) image compo. wise( though this is not the related "this topic"). I also have used 3 MP to record the picture on my FZ-30,But I feel at it full resolution camera funtion is superior( Debatable point, Plz don't fight, we can discuss it out. Is it alright??).Why I am saying this,reasons:-
1) Too many choices in camera cofuses, What initially one wants to do with it.( I mean we become more tachy than an artist)
2)If you compare your 1st and 2 nd image ,In 2nd image, background do have problem.(It shows)
3) For large Print, 3MP is useless for me
Ofcourse there is certain advntages also of having this,But demerits outweigh the merits.

No fight just talk. 3Mp does nothing to solve any noise problem.

It just shuts off pixels so the density problem is still there. What is c/c,

image compo I do not understand your terminology. Yes, there is some

noise in the background in images1 and 2 above but you are missing

the tack sharp detail in the subject, which the FZ30 seldom achieves.

NR is always in play. When the FZ30 gets it right the results are wonderful.

But when it gets it wrong, far too often, it drives me crazy.

Yes, you can achieve larger images before pixilation occurs but to what

purpose the detail is not there.

The image quality of picture 3 and 4 flat out cannot be done with the FZ30.

F2.8 400mm ISO 50, 80 on the FZ30, 1/40sec. The FZ30 would need 100 and

more NR. BTW, this is available light.

Picture 5, 6 and 7 done at 420mm zoom F3 1/1000sec

At 300 – 420mm zoom, the FZ30 has what is called a back focus problem.

Which translates to slight OOF pictures 30% of the time? This does not show

up in 5x7 or small images on the screen which many users post. The color

rendition is on a blue cast but this can be correct by shifting the W/B two

clicks to the red and an exposure bias of +1/3. My friends in Australia use +2/3.

How do I know this I own an Fz30; properly put I owned three FZ30 cameras

before I gave up.

Yes the FZ10 has faults I shoot a -1/3 exposure bias, sharpness high, contrast low,

use spot focus exclusively and hold down the zoom button when turning camera on,

but these can be overcome. The focus is on the money every time. I get around

the large picture cropping issue by doing zoom cropping. There is no way a left

hand manual zoom can match my right index finger for speed.

Yes and I love the FZ30's wheels for F-stops and shutter speed. The flip down

LCD can solve many overhead shots and the buttons are placed better. However,

that soft focus ring is a royal pain. I use a rubber band on the side to stiffen it.

Regrettably, there is no solution for the 30's soft focus. I tried the FZ50 for ten

days NC. I would love to see an FZ that can run without NR with 6-7MP that is

all you need. I will be the first online.

BTW, The DMC L1 has 7MP and Panasonic has announced a less

expensive model for the Pro-sumer which is going to have

10MP do you get the message?

This really is a screwed up post

The photos are too large

And just imagine what you could do with a good camera.

Is that better Gene? Get a bigger tube if you really want to see,,,, A 21" will do the job.

I don't have to imagine I know!

Agreed to you, but what would be the max.size you can print at 3 MP??? Mostly I do print(less web posting, only recently ,I started to post) my picture to Lab for Printing mostly 8" by 12"(Inches) But I aspire to make some of my photogarph to let say 24" by 30"(Inches) What would you suggest???Well you pictures are great..

LoveLife Mar 17, 2007 4:37 PM

You know I did not want to answer this question before I refreshed my memory with the manual and camera. The 3mp is not just a reduction of CCD area usage and file size on disk. It is 3EZ (extended zoom) meaning the ratio of CCD to lens magnification is changed producing larger magnification. This concept rubs me the wrong way. I would not have minded so much if the magnification occurred after passing 12X then it would be my option to push past the 12X into digital zoom range. However, it is implemented across the entire zoom range. The other thing to be careful of is the less effectiveness of OIS but this would also be true of an add-on telephoto. IMO I would stick with 8MP. BTW, I tried 7MP because I am an old Nikon person and like the 35mm image format but found a higher incidence of focus failures.

I set up a little test at this link http://lovelife.smugmug.com/gallery/2592172/1/136622320

Judge these 5 pictures on Sharpness and identify the Panasonic, FZ30 or FZ10, that made them.

Also pick the best full (P1 or P2) and the best close-up (P3, P4 or P5) from the five images.
All have a slight tint change to keep you honest.

Example:

P1-A
P2-D
P3-B
P4-C
P5-E
