Think I jinxed myself yesterday with all the different species around....today was the total opposite, in fact, these were the only 2 subjects I came across all day....
I came across this fly sat out of the wind in the hedge out back....it seemed to be inflating its mouthpiece, giving the impression it was chewing gum and blowing bubbles with it.....funny to watch. Unfortunately the one pic I managed with it`s mouthpiece fully inflated came out pretty poor, due to the wind blowing the leaf around the fly was sat on,despite it being in a fairly sheltered spot....you can still see from pic #1 what I mean though.....

The only other subject which showed up was this ladybird, in almost the same place as I photographed one yesterday.....love the "grey whiskers" on these.....

Very nice and detailed. Do you grow onions? This looks like an onion fly. We get a lot of them sitting on onion plants and they let us get right up to them. And onions do not blow around near as much as some other leaves.

Thanks Happy, not sure on the exact species, I need to find a decent UK insect guide for ID purposes, the one i have is pretty basic, and a lot of species aren`t covered. No one growing onions nearby as far as I know, if I get the exact ID i`ll post it on here....

Thanks Annie and Beth. I`m just glad they were well behaved subjects otherwise if they`d flown i`d have been pictureless today!!

Great job and excellent detail. I especially like the whole green feel of the two fly pictures. You've gotten really good at this.

Good detailed shots. The first two are striking for the clean separation of subject from the background in such a seamless way, the green leaf just blends effortlessly into the green background and helps to define the beautifully detailed subject (ugh using beautiful about a fly!!). I too lovethe whiskers on teh ladybug, perhaps ia grandpabug.

What drugs do you feed your insects to stay still ? mine all fly away the oment I approach within 6 feet.
