Usually, the problem with sunset shot is a get a wide dynamic range. If exposed for the sky, the foreground is underexposed. If expose of the foreground, you get an overexposed sky.

I learnt a tip from here:

and I have shared this in this forum before.

If you can bracket the scene, it is possible to digitally blend it to get a good exposure overall.

Thanks for the information tchunye I am going to try an HDR shot one day but I was shooting hand held and my hands just are not steady enough for that. In truth though, for most sunsets I prefer a dark silhouette foreground as I like the contrast against the colors of the sky and water.
