Back out to sea from Hilton Head, round the shoals east of the island, into Port Royal Sound, past Parris Island (notoriously tough boot camp which provides initial training to those enlisted in the U.S.Marine Corps), to the Intracoastal and to Beaufort.
A shot taken through the gates of the old arsenal in Beaufort.

Spanish first landed in 1514.
French settled nearby Port Royal in 1562 - later fled back to France.
Spanish made new settlement, Santa Elena, on nearby Parris Island - attacked and briefly re-occupied by native Americans before recovery by Spanish.
Sir Francis Drake sent to drive Spanish out of La Florida. Spanish withdrew to concentrate their forces in St. Augustine. Native Americans moved back in to Beaufort until British occupation in 1662.
Scots arrived in 1686, mainly to cultivate and trade in indigo.
Beaufort itself founded in 1711. Settlers from Britain, France and other parts of Europe move in to establish cotton plantations.

Beaufort was not destroyed in the Civil War, so an unusual number of historic sites survive.
