When I was a kid I used to find these in fields now and then, but have never seen one in daylight since I got the camera. Except for one with a broken wing, but that does not count.

i had one of those flying over my yard last night (a bat, but probably not a big fruit bat like that)

Disregarding the wings, about the size of the average cat.

Not dangerous — noisy in numbers, smelly, will scratch and can give you a nasty nip if handled.

There's a large colony about a mile away, often see them flying out to feed in the evenings, just on dark, but rarely does one come close enough to photograph.

This fellow must have been too far away to make it home before daylight (bedtime.)

So are you near the colony that was moved from the botanical gardens to Yarra Bend or another colony. They are really intersting looking. I love seeing them move around silently at dusk.
