Looking West - the sulphurous crater floor.
A lady in the group is a Professor in Geology. She had picked up samples of pumice and obsidian to show us. She explained that they were both the same chemical composition.
Pumice is formed when effervescent gases get entrained in the molten rock as it cools.
Obsidian is a supercooled liquid - like glass. It was used widely throughout the area up to 5,000 years ago as jewellery and knife blades.
She told us that when obsidian is flaked, it forms an exceptionally sharp cutting edge just a few molecules thick. It is now being tested for use in scalpels for eye surgery.
