I am considering one of these as a travel companion, I already have several shirt pocket P&S's but they always lack something.

I do a lot of traveling, and need something that will take excellent macro's as well as excellent landscapes. I do not want to take my DSLR into the rain forest or to countries where it will make me a target for theft.

I was just wondering of the two above, which would be the best.

An FZ50 may make you just as much a target. In terms of bulkiness, it comes near DSLR size. In the hands, especially considering the built-in 35-420mm lens, it comes nowhere near the weight of even a DSLR with justa typical standard zoom, but we're just talking what someone else would see.

Also, if you do not plan to take advantage of the FZ50's hot shoe by using a separate flash youmight be better off with the 28-504mm zoom option and newer processing of the FZ18. I took my FZ50 and 24mm conversion lens (DMW-LW55) to Paris in September for 15 days and it was just easy to carry everywhere. My girlfriend took her FZ8. Either an FZ50 or FZ18 would be a great all-in-one option. The FZ50 doesgive great results..
