I think you should have swam out and measured. Alligators have to eat too you know.

Not quite as sharp as I would like. Next time you want to experiment do this, and then do one at 8 MP and crop to same size and compare. I don't know if that would be any better since when you get way out there things are just not as sharp as they were, but it would be a good experiment.

Steve,

Your right I should have taken one at 8mp as well, I would have had I not gotten into a batch of red tide earlier and was hacking my head off.

As for swimming out and measuring the exact distance I think not, he was just waiting for me to slip.

I could not see your exif data to see the settings you used but the picture looks overexposed to me. That means you could have increased the shutter speed to help with any blurring caused by camera shake. 100 yards is a pretty long shot but I think you could keep experimenting and get a better shot. If you have decent light try setting your camera on manual, f5.6 or so, and they running the shutter speed as high as you can. Don't be afraid to underexpose the picture a bit in order to keep a high shutter speed because that can be corrected easily in PP where camera shake blur can't.
