Default Lumix FZ35: 35x optical zoom at 3 mp ?

I was reading in some reviews about the optical zoom of the FZ35. It was said you can get 35x optical zoom at 3mp resolution. Are there particular shooting modes or settings to accomplish this ?

Are the results good ?

Thanks.

logo10heli-

The statement that "...you can get 35X optical zoom at 3mp resolution..." is incorrect.

That 35X zoom is achieved by using digital zoom which is of much, much lower image quality than optical zoom.

Sarah, one of the first things I did when I got my FZ38 was to disable the Digital Zoom function - This to ensure that I would not engage it by mistake.
Doubt that I would ever use the Digital Zoom, due to the reduced image quality as you rightly said.

Actually this statement is incorrect, and Logo10heli is correct.

This is not a digital zoom as digital zoom retains the original photo size but fills in the blanks with interpolation.

This is starting at 3mp and remains using 3mp however the pixels used are the pixels in the centre of the sensor so it is more like a digital tele converter (when using a tele converter on a lens you are only using the middle portion of the lens).

Either way I wouldn't bother with it as you are using much smaller photos and you can get the same thing by cropping on the PC later and you still have the large photo to start with if you need it.
