probably I need to understand photography more, but isn't AF Macro supposed to be for very close targets? I wouldn't expect the camera to focus on these...

i used the AF macro, not the macro zoom. what can i say...it worked

There were a lot of times I forgot to take my camera out of macro mode, but the PIX still seemed to turn out great (but its not a sure thing so watch it). It probably was OK because you were really close (particularly for a concert) plus zoomed.
