I guess it works either way. Leaving it OFF gives a great barrel or tunnel shot.
I definitely have mine off Clint and I read someplace it is best to do so.

But it is understood, that if it is off, then you have to zoom in a bit to get rid of the tunnel and in some picks their may be slight vignetting at low zoom. The tunnel will start to disappear at around 5x.

I have never gotten a truly sharp photo using the full zoom 18x with or without the teleconvertor.

Are you using the FZ35?

That's a very long focal length, and just because you've got stabilization, doesn't mean you don't have to be very careful about not causing camera movement when depressing the shutter button, especially at borderline shutter speeds. The smaller your subject (zooming in as much as you are, where the subject occupies a greater percentage of the frame), the more obvious any blur from camera shake or subject movement is going to be, too. That's because a smaller amount of movement while the shutter is open is going to occur across a greater portion of the image you view later, if a small subject is filling the frame more.

I'd see what you get with a tripod, using a self timer with stabilization turned off to make sure the lens is OK. It probably is (and any TC is gong to add a bit of optical degradation anyway).

Yep. FZ35 with TCONN-17. You don't want the telecoverter on unless you need zoom over 14x lets say (randomly) as it becomes redundant at that point. The camera its self can handle 14x without the TC (I start to get the fuzzies or CA at 15X to 18x without the TC). I am constantly removing and putting on my TC as it is not a true lens in the fashion one would classify a lens on a DSLR system.

Go give it a try. Get some shots at 25x with TC set to off in the menu and report back.

Sounds like he might be an endangered species!!

OK - I tried it and my old eyes can't see a lot of difference comparing the shots with the tele conversion off - tele lens attached and tele lens off using comparable EZ modes.

So I ask - what did the $180 LT -55 get me??????????

I know the tele lens can magnify 1.7 times.

I guess if the FZ35 didn't have the Extended Zoom modes that might make a difference for me.

I don't have a teleconverter but have watched this thread with great interest. Great information from several of our members and moderators. Thanks for that.

All I can add to the conversation is that I wish that everyone considering one of these lenses could read this entire thread. It lays out the challenges and the limitations fairly and clearly.

I am no longer tempted, although I see the possibilities if I were willing to work harder at photography than I am.

Thanks Jack - here's a shot that I just took in the Extended Optical mode - 35.2x
About 120-140 feet distance.

I don't think the LT55 delivers $180 worth of difference the way I want to use it.

But as EPA says - "Your mileage may vary."

I agree Clint and that's why I opted for the TCONN-17 at $100 as opposed to $180.

Clint,

Your picture says it all,.....the Extended Zoom is my preference but if someone has the patience to use the teleconverters, they can get special pictures that suit them. I actually like to keep it simple. That's why I no longer will carry a camcorder. The FZ35 suits me fine.

Here is a thought to consider, Jack-

Is the Fuji HS-10, now just arriving on dealer's shelves, the replacement for Sony's HX-1, or even the FZ-35, if Panasonic keeps the zoom again locked at 18X.

The 30X capability of the HS-10 could solve the issue that Clint has had to deal with the LT-55? Just wondering?
