Glad you got there. I don't have a FZ35 but as far as I know there should be no issues. Are you sure it was fully locked into place?

I haven't really used mine yet. But like Mark says make sure it attached properly. Are you using the little adapter ring with it?

Yes it was put on correctly. I got black areas on both sides of the picture, like the lens hood got in the way. The lens was at wide angle. Maybe I should try it again.

Are the long "petals" on the hood on the sides or the top and bottom as it is fitted to your camera?

If the lens hood is visible in the picture, rotate it 90 degrees. Its a mystery to me because the lens is round and shouldn't make a difference but it does.

There is only one way to put the lens hood on. There is a locking screw that tightens the hood to the adaptor and that screw is located on the bottom of the hood. I think the hood will interfer with the shot if the lens is in wide angle. I think there is a warning about this somewhere in the 219 pape manual.
