You are correct, they do overlap some. I like the Creative setting because I can get more area in focus with F8 if I have enough light. The only other thing you can do with macros is to get a mono pod or tripod to be even more steady but I don't use one. You could also try the close up macro lens DMW LC55. I lust got mine but haven't had a chance to really use it yet.
Search for LTZ470 and take a look at his macros on this site.

I have the feeling that mmmany of these preselected modes (macro, flower, food, sceens, AP, sports etc) do overlap ALOT each other.
