Default 20 Things You Should Never Buy Used

Saw this on Yahoo today:
http://shopping.yahoo.com/articles/y...ever-buy-used/ from US News and World Report.

9. Digital and video cameras: Like laptops, used digital and video cameras are likely to have been dropped and banged around. It may not be obvious, but once the damage kicks in, it'll be expensive to repair. If you know what to look for in a digital camera, you can get a great new camera without breaking the bank.

11. Camera lenses: An SLR camera lens is the most expensive part of a camera. It also directly affects the quality of your images. Any damage to the lens, however slight, will show up in your photos.

12. Photo light bulbs: Not the ordinary light bulbs you use at home. We're talking about the light bulbs used with photography equipment. They're relatively expensive, but their life span is short enough that you likely won't get much use out of them if you buy second-hand.

I've bought most of my lenses used. :-)

I just try to buy them from reputable vendors that check them for problems and grade them fairly (and also offer good return policy and a short term warranty).

http://www.keh.com and http://www.bhphotovideo.com are two good sources for used lenses and I've bought used gear from both. http://www.adorama.com also sells used gear (for example, I bought my Minolta 100mm f/2 AF lens from them, but I prefer to use keh.com for used gear when they have what I want).

Now, I have bought from Ebay before, too. For example, I got a Minolta Maxxum 7000 SLR with a Minolta 50mm f/1.7 AF lens, 1800AF Flash, case and manuals for a buy it now price of $49 for the entire package. But, I prefer to go with reputable vendors on more expensive items. :-)

I've also bought used laptops on Ebay (one of the other items the writer suggests never buying used). LOL The poster had a good rep, and said the battery held a charge. So, I decided to risk buying one that way some years back. I spent a whopping $112 for it at the time (around 5 years ago, and it still works). It's a Sager laptop with a 300Mhz PII Mobile CPU and 256MB of RAM (enough to run a light weight linux distro).

I really do not hesitate to purchase used equipment and lenses. Purchase from reputable sites like B&H, KEH, and Adorama. I have never received a bad camera or lens, and saved a few buck in the process.

Likewise from Adorama and B&H. Lenses and cameras and have never been disappointed.
