MindyMouse-

Please keep in mind that there is indeed a minimum focus distance for macro shots. If you get too close the FZ-35 cannot focus sharply and you get this "not quite focused" look.

So only go as close as the camera can still focus. The reason why the sleeping baby photo looks much better is that the camera was outside of the minimum focus distance and the FZ-35 camera was able to lock focus.
