As I see it: FZ-35-1st, FZ-40-2nd, FZ-100-3rd. The FZ 35 and FZ-40 are close, but the FZ-35 nudged through with better sharpness.

It must be very close then. As the FZ40 looked a bit sharper with a little less fringing to me. both the 35/40 outdid the 100 imo, but i think there is something wrong in the 100's image processor, if they fix that, i think it will be close as well.

You are spot on Dustin...the metering on the FZ40 seems much better than either the FZ35 or the FZ100...it seems to be a very good camera...if you pixel peep the telephotos the FZ100 and the FZ40 beat the FZ35 on IQ and clarity, but the photos on all of them look nice to me...handling on the FZ40 and FZ100 is streamlined and user friendly... the FZ35 seems to have a larger focal depth at tele length and that makes it seem higher in IQ, when actually it is not...I'll post some photos to show the difference later...I took some with the FZ35 connected to the TC-E17ED and with the FZ100 at max focal lgth...

BTW I got the LA5 adapters from Japan yesterday and the extra battery...the FZ100 and the TC-E17ED are an awesome match as well as the LC-55 on the FZ100...

Another note is that the FZ100 photos take PP very well...and seem to benefit more from it than the FZ40 and FZ35...after posting all these SOOC, I PP'd a few and the FZ100 photos clean up nicely...

LTZ-

You may have hit upon the key issue. The DOF does makes the FZ-35 appear a bit better in the image quality department.

LTZ-

I am still within my return period for the FZ35 so, if money was no object, which one would you pick (FZ35 or FZ40)?

Thanks, it would be much appreciated.

FZ40...it is set up better than the FZ35 and the battery is better (albeit more expensive)...at the long end of the zoom the FZ40 has better IQ than the FZ35...it also made the light work of the macros...I had to take the FZ35 macros over and over to get the light metered correctly andstill didn't do a very good job at it...the FZ40 meters better than the FZ35 or FZ100...don't know why, but the metering is much better meaning better exposed shots and more keepers...this is where the FZ100 is all over the board too is the metering if it changes no matter how slight really changes the complete photo on the FZ100...I am sure a firmware update will solve a lot of thes problems...

The FZ100 and the FZ40 both have better IQ at the long end of the zoom than the FZ35 and they should with 24X Zoom...even with a a Teleconverter on the FZ35 the IQ was the same as the FZ100 at the long end without a TC...I was pleasantly surprised so when I add the TC on the FZ100 it will be excellent! For birding it will be awesome, but I will do some testing...the same on the FZ40 itmay be that it does better with a TC than the FZ100 as the metering on the FZ40 seems very good and it should autofocus well with the TC on it...thats where the HS10 lacked is it couldn't auto focus very well at the long end and when I put the TC on it it became worse...

My sister is considering the FZ35 which is selling for around 300 right now. My husband can get the FZ100 for 375 (or the FZ40 for 368). I've been reading reviews and the FZ35 seems to be the favorite..though you are getting some great shots with the FZ100. Considering the discounted price, though, I'm wondering if it's worth it for some of the added features like the increased zoom and the articulating screen?

The FZ35 is very easy to use but the FZ40 is also...the FZ100 takes more work than those two...but for $375 I would definitely have to get the FZ100...then buy a used FZ35...I got one like new from B&H the other day for $229 shipped...you would have the best of both then as the price on the FZ40 will drop throughout the year...
