Hi amateurkidspicturetaker (whew!!),

I have a scracth guard stuck on to my LCD screen - its something like what u stick on to ur mobile phone screens - its fairly inexpensive - around USD 6-8 here in India. This ensures that there are no scratches on the LCD.
For your lens - you can use a UV filter and leave it on - as suggested by Mystery
