Default FZ38 noise and other questions

Hi!

I've just started using my FZ38 in anger and as relative newbie to photography there certainly is a lot to learn. At the moment I'm taking most pictures in 'P' mode, and can get some occasional (by mistake, no doubt) decent shots.

However, one thing that is bothering me is the amount of noise in the pictures I take. For example the attached 100% crop (taken from http://lh3.ggpht.com/_sVNPOMaA6z4/TN...0/P1010090.JPG )

The underside of the wings I find quite bad, but I'm not sure if this would be noticeable if I were to have this printed. Reducing the size a lot of course removes a lot of noise, which is fine for online.

So is this amount of noise to be expected, are my expectations too high or is simply that my technique is wrong (wrong settings or perhaps my hands were too shaky)?

As I recall all Picture Adjustment settings were at +1 except noise reduction which was at 0.

I would really appreciate any opinions on this, as well as advice on the minimal amount of post processing I should do before sending it off to be printed (apart from cropping, that is)

Cheers
Dave

which superzoom bridge cam does not have noise at 100% crop?

i think FZ35 RAW files of 12 mp cropped down to 2mp or 3mp produce decent prints.

You should try DenoiseMyImage - it is freeware and works fast with great results.

So it would seem that my expectations are incorrect - thanks for setting me straight on that. Any idea of roughly the maximum print size I can expect to get decent pictures at? I'm hoping to do some at A4 size (or thereabouts).

Nope, I have digital zoom disabled - one of the few things I do know about digital cameras

Ah, I'd look at it, but I'm not a Windows person. I like to make life difficult for myself

Thanks for the suggestion though.

yes sir. if u want usable pictures @ 100% crop, u have to get a decent dslr system.

good quality 2mp / 3mps make decent prints, can handle 12" pretty well. but it all depends on printing dpi, while news papers use less dpi, magazines with stunning pictures use uber dense pixels.

Put contrast and saturation at -1. Less noise.

Ah, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for pointing that out.

Excellent! I shall try that out. Presumably these are then better applied in post-processing.

Cheers!
