Default DMC-FZ100 -v- Leica V-Lux 2

Greetings, this being my first post.
I have been trawling through countless web sites and reviews in my search to upgrade from a basic point and shoot to a compact DSLR style camera.
Having narrowed the field down to something like the above 2 units, I now find that invariably every single site apperas to change the specs of these 2 cameras, from the manufacturer's published data sheets.
The main difference I have found so far, consolidating all the reviews and "data" sheets, is that the DMC-FZ100 supposedly only record in JPEG format, whereas the V-Lux 2 record in both JPEG and RAW.
Is there anyone able to advise whether the above is fact and how important "raw" is?

regards

The FZ100 will record both RAW and JPEG. Some people like to use RAW and "process" the picture themselves. My understanding of RAW is the "unprocessed data" the camera captures. If you set the camera for both RAW and JPEG it takes the RAW picture and then takes a second "camera processed" picture - JPEG. I always found the camera did a great job on it's own with JPEG. Occasionally I will try to process some RAW pics but my results are usually not as good as the camera.

Many thanks for your reply.
I have now seen users refer to capturing images in RAW format on the FZ100, but none of the reviews, nor the Panasonic web-site list RAW as being available, as it was in the FZ35.
