Default Difference between 18x and 24x zoom?

I was wondering, does anyone have any comparison shots of what the 18x zoom of the FZ35 looks like as opposed to the 24x zoom of the FZ40? I keep getting hung up on this point between the two cameras. I'm kind of leaning towards the FZ35, but I keep thinking about the 24x zoom of the FZ40. One of the big reasons I want a superzoom for is photographing freighters as they sail by. I'm only a couple miles from the Lake Huron shoreline and see freighters quite regularly sailing by in the warmer months. They even pull into the harbor here to offload coal at the power plant. They are a few miles off shore when sailing by and I was looking for something that can take good shots of them (I'm hugely interested in Great Lakes ships). I figure if these things can take decent pictures of the moon, they should be able to take a decent pic of a lowly 'ol ship floating by right? Will the difference in 6x zoom be big?

I don't have both to provide comparison, but I highly recommend the FZ40. One consideration is that they have a different wide-angle starting point, so you don't really get an extra 6x zoom, you go from a wider lens to a longer lens - advantages at both ends of the range.

JayC-

At least in my shooting, the difference in the final zoom is really not that important. I shoot with the FZ28 (18X) and the FZ40 (24X) and i rarely find myself out at full zoom on either camera.

And thus the reason I sold my TCONN-17 on Ebay. It just wasn't really needed with the zoom it had already. I find myself using it less and less and as the 18x zoom was quite adequate as I started realizing what makes for good pictures that are appealing to me. I think extensive zoom is overrated at times but its nice to have on rare occasion at least for point and shoot cameras.

Personally, I would take the 24 over 18 any day, provided the lens quality is equally good (like the FZ40). I bought the FZ35 thinking there wasn't enough difference to pay the extra $ for, but now in retrospect I often wish I had that extra zoom when going after birds. Sooo....I just ordered an LT55.

I would recommend the FZ40 also. Although the zoom difference is very small, with the FZ40 you get a better wide angle (25mm with the FZ40 vs 27mm with the FZ35). You have a larger LCD screen on the FZ40 (3in vs 2.7in). Plus the biggest plus the FZ40 has over the FZ35 is that the FZ40 is still in production.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll bypass the FZ35. I was thinking about it because it still seems extremely popular, and me being cheap the lower price was tempting. In the end, though, I think if I got the FZ35 the FZ40 would be constantly nagging at me with the increased zoom. But the FZ40 is not completely in the clear, either. The proprietary battery for it bugs me being that it has a chip in it. I was rather surprised to see how expensive it is. I was kind of hoping there was a good camera out there that took AAs. I've got some excellent AAs (pre-charged Duracells (white tops) which are Sanyo Eneloops with a different label) that I have no need for since I got rid of my old Samsung S85. I didn't even use the camera that much, so the batteries are still pretty new. I also have a LaCrosse BC900 I rarely use. I just don't like seeing them sit.
