Default First Moon shot

Took this tonight and not happy. It was taken at 320 ISO F4.4 and ss 1/1000.
How can i improve?
I had the long lens on and used a tripod too but it just isn't sharp enough.
Unhappy
E.

You need to use spot metering and and an ISO of 80 to 100. You may need to use the EZ (extended optical) zoom instead of digital zoom in order to prevent the distortion that you get with digital zoom.

If you are using the LT55 then you do not need to use EZ zoom, you can if you want and in order to access the EZ zoom you need to lower your camera's resolution. Bring up the camera's menu and go to picture size and choose one of the sizes that has the EZ icon next to it. The lower the size the more zoom you can get.

The LT55 teleconverter is a 1.7x magnification lens. So if you have the FZ40 then the lens increases the maximum zoom of the lens from 600mm (or 24X) to 1020mm (or 40.8X).

E. you've inspired me to give it a shot.

I think my resulting shot is...meh! It leaves a lot of room for improvement

f8, 1/250, 100 iso, -1exposure.

'Supermoon' this weekend so a chance for some really good shots

Spot metering because the moon is so bright compared to the black sky.
Tripod+Low ISO - The moon's not really moving that fast so you don't need a hugely fast shutter speed. However, atmospheric distortion does affect it so not too long either. Manual focus helps. Take lots of shots. You can also combine them to get better results but you'd be surprised at how much the atmosphere wobbles so be selective in the ones you combine.

It took me many attempts to get one I was really happy with. (FZ38+LT55, 5MP ez zoom, combined shots, heavily processed). Described in more detail here: http://forums.steves-digicams.com/pa...cessing-2.html

eysha, this is the moon taken with the FZ40 at 7mp EZ zoom 33.8X + Panasonic LT55 teleconverter. This was taken in programmed auto mode with the aperture at f/5.2, ISO80. This image is a crop of the original image which had some excess empty space.

I wish photobucket would quit hurting the image quality though.

Thanks for the replies.
Martin that is an excellent shot and i would be most happy with it. I will be trying again tonight and will try spot metering as you say. what shutter speed do you suggest? and maybe a 200 ISO? I have a tripod so will start as soon s it gets dark to give me more time.

I think I used ISO80. The moon is really bright so you really don't need anything higher. I also used f8 which I think sharpens it up a bit.
