yes, thats what happens with me when i try to focus too close to the subject when zooming.

Green square and beep... but the focus isnt on the foreground subject because its too close... it focus the background, with the green square on the center of the screen over the blury area.

Like you have in first pic, with the red flower.

I step back and try again and it focus properly inside the green square

Macro mode is supposed to focus at 0,01m (1 cm). I was not closer than that, of course!

It's supposed and it's confirmed.

It can focus that close, on the wide angle end... when zooming, the distance increases and at full zoom, minimum focus distance is 1m.

Hi There - as others have stated, and I agree, this problem occurs when you are too close to the subject, or even when further away and using the zoom and you have zoomed in too much. The camera continually beeps and tells you that it cant focus. I love close up and macro shots and my FZ45 beeps happily away at me. I used the FZ38 for a year and had exactly the same thing happen. It really is just a matter of moving back a bit, or zooming out bit by bit till the camera gives you a sharp focus, and if you are still not happy - then change position and re-try. Dont forgot that even if you are further away from the subject and you zoom in, you will still block a certain amount of light from the subject. I too have this problem at times and you just have to keep practising and snapping. I have attached a couple of examples

Both shots the camera lens was 1-2cm away from the flower.

It seems that you are talking for something different from what I am saying,,,
I am using ANY focus mode (except manual) I am not TOO close to the subject, I GOT that 'correct focus beep and GREEN square", but the focus point was set in a different point, as you can obviously see in the following photograph.

Nice photos Diane, I suppose though, you could post them in an other thread, as I am waiting for someone (if any) to answer to my problem.

When you took the photo did you zoom in to get closer to the flower?

kibaris, even if you are not physically too close to your subject, zooming in is essentially the same as getting close. So I would try moving back or zooming out. When you get the green square confirmation, look at your subject in your LCD to make sure your subject actually is in focus. I often get false confirmation too.
